About Snow Day Calculator
An independent, free website that reads the National Weather Service forecast for your ZIP code and shows the chance of a snow day, a late start or school as usual, with its reasons.
Snow Day Calculator answers the question every family asks on a snowy evening: will there be school tomorrow? Type the ZIP code of a school and the site reads the National Weather Service forecast for that place, weighs the snow, ice, cold and warnings expected before and during the school day, and shows three chances that add up to 100%: a snow day, a late start, or school as usual. It shows its reasons beside every number.
How the answers are made
The calculator follows rules we publish in full on How the calculator works. The forecast comes live from the National Weather Service; how much snow a place gets in a normal year comes from NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals; ZIP code areas come from the U.S. Census Bureau. Our server and your browser work the same rules, and we test the two against each other and against cases worked by hand.
What it is not
Only your school district decides whether your school closes, opens late or switches to remote learning, and it tells families through its own website, app, calls and local TV and radio. This site cannot see those decisions. The chances it shows are estimates from the forecast and a rule of thumb, and forecasts change. We do not claim a success rate: we have not yet measured it against real closings, and we found no independent test of any snow day calculator.
Independent
This is not a school, a school district or a government website. It is not run by any state education department, the National Weather Service or any other government agency, and has no link with them. It is not connected with any other snow day calculator or website. No school, district or company pays us or chooses what we publish.
